Lady Gaga Just Got A Bunch Of Oscar Nominations, Because Of Course She Did
Also some other people got nominations, I guess.
It’s the (second) most wonderful day of the year for Hollywood: the Oscar nominations have just been announced. And, as was foretold in the entertainment stars, forever bae Lady Gaga has just picked up a couple of the much-desired nods.
Gaga is being honoured for her work in A Star Is Born, a bittersweet (and brilliant) remake that throws a young up-and-comer (Gaga) and an older alcoholic country star named Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper, also the film’s director) into an alternately sweet and sour collision course.
A Star Is Born has been an awards frontrunner since it premiered in the States to rave reviews late last year.
But, although once considered a shoe-in for most of the major awards, the film’s chances to actually win most of the awards that have been thrown its way have been waning.

The film was shockingly passed over by the Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture Drama, and has been pipped at a number of awards season posts by everything from the saccharine Green Book to the directed-by-an-alleged-sexual-predator Bohemian Rhapsody.
That Gaga today has been nominated twice for both Best Actress In A Leading Role and Best Original Song is, of course, well-deserved.
But her chance of winning in the first category is slim to none: that award will almost certainly go to Glenn Close for her work in The Wife. Close has the advantage of a long and storied onscreen career on her side; Gaga is a baby by contrast.
The two got to share a lead actress award at a recent ceremony: that will not happen on Oscars night, sadly.

A Star Is Born doesn’t have much hope in the other categories it has today been nominated in either. Sure, the film has picked up a nomination for Best Picture, but it doesn’t really have a chance there: that award will almost certainly go to Green Book or Roma come the actual Academy Awards.
Oh well. We’ll just have to bask in Lady Gaga getting her two nominations and stop looking gift horses in their mouths, I guess.
In non-Gaga news, Black Panther became the first ever Marvel film to score an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, while rounding out the top category are BlackKklansman, The Favourite, Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody.
