In another uncomfortable attempt to appear relatable, Hollywood couple Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have overshared an anecdote about a rancid mattress filled with maggots.

The actors — whose rich career histories were overshadowed by news last year that they don’t bathe their kids until they smell “the stink” every five or six days — have come back with more insights into their personal life, in the latest ep of Shepard’s Spotify podcast Armchair Expert.

Shepard interviews his wife to promote the release of her Netflix comedy show The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window. Bell reflected on how the family of four all sleep together in one room — with seven-year-old Delta, and eight-year-old Lincoln spending their nights on the floor next to their parents.

While a bit odd but not unheard of, the biggest revelation was what we can only assume was meant to be a funny story about their stinky mattress pad. The OOLER sleep system they own requires water to help regulate temperature during the night, but a different liquid was added in by ‘mistake’ instead.

Bell described a lingering smell in the bedroom which she originally put down to everyone’s combined fart levels. “My whole family has gas,” she said. “I wake up in the morning and I go, ‘wow, nobody’s gas has dissipated, but it also smells like it’s burning’.”

After ticking off all the usual solutions — lighting a candle, washing the sheets, and opening up the doors to promote fresh air circulation — the smell turned into a rotten garbage stench. Their investigation led back to the OOLER, when Shepard released he had filled it with leftover protein shake he’d left on their bedside table. In the time elapsed, the mattress pad had obviously filled up with maggots, which is as gross as it is predictable.

It’s safe to say the average layman wouldn’t mistake water for an old protein shake, nor would they attempt to clean the maggots out like the celeb duo did, instead of seeing it for the unsalvageable biohazard it clearly was.

The jam-packed episode also saw Shepard air his thoughts on washing your feet with soap — a safety risk in his eyes, which can be circumvented by peeing on your feet, or giving them a wipe down with a rag when out of the shower instead. Each to their own, but the more we learn about this cursed family, the less we want to hear.
