Kate McKinnon Should Get All The Oscars For Her ‘Carol’ Parody Of Horny Cate Blanchett
"I'm going to get what's mamas."
On one level, Todd Haynes’ Carol is a tender and heartwrenching love story between two women struggling to be their true selves in a society tragically devoid of compassion. In one of her most affecting performances to date, Cate Blanchett makes a stand for her rights as both a woman and a lesbian in 1950s America and romances shopgirl Rooney Mara — simultaneously opening her up to a whole new world of possibility and strength.
On another level, it tells the tale of a horny housewife using lost gloves as an in to get her rocks off with a confused young babe behind Kyle Chandler’s back. Unsurprisingly, Kate McKinnon and Kumail Nanjiana who hosted the Independent Spirit Awards last night, chose to tell the latter story in their parody of the film:
Despite being nominated for six awards last night including Best Feature, Carol only took home the prize for Best Cinematography, with Brie Larson beating both Blanchett and Mara for her work in Room. The majority of the other major awards went out to Spotlight which won Best Feature, Director and Screenplay — all categories it’s nominated for at today’s Oscars.
Unfortunately, Carol may not get its due here either after bizarrely missing out on a nomination for Best Picture. Larson is facing off against Blanchett once again for Best Actress, Alicia Vikander is expected to beat Mara for her work in The Danish Girl, and nods for Best Screenplay and Costume Design are likely to be similarly snapped up by The Big Short and Mad Max: Fury Road respectively.
At least the film’s stars don’t seem too fazed by it. After the parody aired at last night’s awards, Cate Blanchett smiled and playfully grabbed Mara’s boob before presenting an award:
Never change, Cate.
