Junkee’s 2017 Oscars Liveblog: Hey, Let’s Get Ready To Argue!

It’s Oscars day! The 89th Academy Awards are about to kick off in LA and it’s looking set to be one of the most controversial and interesting ceremonies in recent memory.

La La Land is facing off against Moonlight for Best Picture — a competition which has become increasingly polemical due to the (largely race- and ideological-related) backlash against the former and the critical adoration and political might of the latter. Casey Affleck and Mel Gibson are both up for awards, prevailing against the many people who don’t love seeing men accused of (or in Gibson’s case, plainly guilty of) abuse being celebrated on the main stage.

Also, 99.999 percent of people there will be fighting against Donald Trump. If the Screen Actor’s Guild Awards were anything to go by, the whole thing will end with a ceremonial Nazi-punching song and hey, maybe that’s just the way things are now.
