Even if you never actually sat down to watch it — which, like, shame on you — you’re probably well aware of The Young Pope.

Helmed by noted Italian auteur Paolo Sorrentino, starring noted hot person Jude Law, the limited miniseres follows the exploits of a foul-mouthed American Pope called Lenny. Not exactly commercial stuff, sure. But thanks to that gobsmacking title — not to mention the show’s dedication to being as strange as fucking possible — The Young Pope found itself a committed audience. Pope-heads, if you will.

Well, fellow Pope-heads, today is the day we have been waiting for: the very first trailer for the new series of the show, titled The New Pope, is here.

Admittedly, the first look is somewhat scant on actual details. There’s no indication as to how Lenny might have got himself out of the various sticky situations he had mired himself in by the end of the initial ten episode-run. Nor do we get much of a sense of which cast members are actually returning, or how interested Sorrentino is in poring back over old storylines.

Instead, what we get is an extended look at Lenny walking down a beach in nothing but a pair of tighty-whities. Which is probably all you need to get your interest piqued anyway.

Oh, there’s also a few shots of John Malkovich looking pensive — it’d be safe to bet he’s Lenny’s new foil. Sadly missing from the trailer is Marilyn Manson, who was confirmed to star a few months ago; let’s hope we get a peak at whatever nonsense he’s up to real soon.

The exact premiere date of The New Pope is still up in the air — particularly because we live in Australia, the land that TV forgot — but the teaser does promise it’s coming “soon”‘.
