‘Get Out’ Director Jordan Peele Had The Best Reaction To His Oscar Nomination
"You know when you’re on the phone trying to disguise the sound of an ugly cry? I failed at that."
The Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as always there’s a lot to take in. The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri seem to have cemented their status as Best Picture favourites after receiving 20 nominations between them. Meanwhile, Australia’s own Margot Robbie landed a (well deserved) nod for Best Actress in I, Tonya.
But one of the biggest stories of #Oscars2018 is Jordan Peele’s Get Out. The ingenious horror film struck a chord with audiences and critics, and was rewarded with four nominations. Peele scored three, for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, while leading man Daniel Kaluuya was recognised with a nomination for Best Actor.
Peele’s nominations are especially significant. He’s the first African American ever to be nominated in all three major categories, and just the fifth to be nominated for Best Director.
Naturally, he was pretty excited about it.

I just spoke to Daniel. You know when you’re on the phone trying to disguise the sound of an ugly cry? I failed at that.

Right now I’m just thinking about everyone who bought a ticket and told someone else to. You did this. Thank you. ✊?

“What is most meaningful for me, is what kind of impact this will have on artists of color,” Peele told Deadline this morning. “Anyone who feels like the outsider can hopefully see what we did with this film and be encouraged that with hard work that they can achieve their dream.”
“I’m so happy for Daniel,” he added. “I think it was one of my most favorite performances of all time. He’s my favorite actor. The first thing I did was … well, I texted him and he called me and we both sort of blubbered. Actually, I blubbered way more than him. He was bouncing off the walls and I was curled up in a ball.”
The 2018 Oscar winners will be announced on March 4.
