Johnny Depp Is Suing Amber Heard For $50 Million Over Allegations He Abused Her
Heard's lawyer called it "just the latest of Johnny Depp's repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard".
Actor Johnny Depp is suing his ex-wife Amber Heard for US$50 million, claiming she defamed him in an article she wrote for The Washington Post about domestic abuse.
In the article, published in December, Heard wrote that she missed out on acting and advertising jobs after accusing her then-husband Depp of physical and emotional abuse in 2016.
“I spoke up against sexual violence — and faced our culture’s wrath,” she wrote.
Although Heard does not name her ex-husband in the Post article, Depp’s lawsuit claims it’s clear who she is referring to. It also refers to Heard’s allegations of abuse “categorically and demonstrably false”, and accuses her of perpetrating “an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity and advance her career”.
Heard’s lawyers fired back, calling the defamation suit “the latest of Johnny Depp’s repeated efforts to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced. Mr. Depp’s actions prove he is unable to accept the truth of his ongoing abusive behavior”.
Depp and Heard divorced in 2017, with Heard awarded US$7 million that she later donated to charity. Both actors signed nondisclosure agreements as part of the settlement, prohibiting them from discussing their relationship publicly.
