In 2000, Jim Carrey played the Grinch in How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

While an absolutely top-tier film, it’s well-known that the makeup process for Jim Carrey was a real journey. Special effects makeup artist Kazuhiro Tsuji explained that while filming The Grinch, Jim Carrey went through hours of makeup application each day. The full body transformation required not only prosthetics, but all over green fur and huge contacts too.

But underneath all the special effects makeup, Jim Carrey’s notoriously expressive face really shone through. The best example of this was when the Grinch pulled his iconic scary smile at the very start of How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

Twenty years since the iconic flick, Jim Carrey has proved that he still has the Grinch moves in him. While at the press junket for his new movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey transformed into his old green character in the middle of the interview.

Retelling a story of children finding out he was actually the Grinch, Jim Carrey contorted his face to match the character. “You know their parents [would say] ‘You know who that is? That’s the Grinch!’,” Carrey recounted. After reciting one of his most quotable Grinch lines with his signature sinister smile, Jim Carrey then explained that parents often thought it was makeup that made his face look that way.

The clip quickly went viral online, with people just in awe of Jim Carrey’s unbelievable ability to control the muscles in his face. Some even suggested that the only logical explanation for his talents was either extra facial muscles — that or Jim Carrey is simply just made of rubber and clay.

Beyond the speculation of how it was even physically possible, people just really couldn’t handle just how similar Jim Carrey and his character looked when placed side by side. Truly amazing areas.

If you want to catch some more glimpses of Jim Carrey’s super expressive face, the new and less horific ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ is in Australian cinemas now.
