If you ever turned the radio on in the 2010s, you’ll know that a few artist are notorious for singing their names during their songs.

Of course, there’s Pitbull, otherwise known as Mr. Worldwide or Mr. 305. Then there’s everyone’s favourite R&B artist, Usher, Usʰᵉʳ, ᵁˢʰᵉʳ. Even Australia was represented well through Aussie icon Timomatic, who was quite fond of the cheeky self-name drop.

But there’s no denying that the one, the only, Jason Derulo, is the absolute king of singing his own name. That’s because unlike other artists, name dropping himself wasn’t a one-time thing. Jason Derulo sang his name in damn near every song he made, and it actually sounded great.

However, as Jason Derulo has grown in his career, he’s shifted away from singing the iconic “Jaaaaaasoonnn Derulooooooo”. Instead, he’s moved into a more sleek “Derulo” to help let people know that a track is his — or sadly, just doesn’t name drop at all.

But we, as people with taste, can’t allow the musical styling of Jason Derulo’s own name die. So people on TikTok have created a new trend where they rank all the different ways that Jason Derulo sings his name.

Using an audio track uploaded by Derulo himself, each video each ranks each style or attributes the sound to a certain type of object — from hair curls to decorative spoons. With the sounds pulled from official song recordings — like off his classic ‘Whatcha Say’ — and from weird little live, bootleg videos, the whopping eight different sound bites each exude their own very unique energy.

And thanks to these distinctly different vibes, people have been able to rank the sounds from best to worst in TikTok’s most baffling, but best, new trend.

But even better than just ranking the sounds, teens on TikTok have also been attributing the ways that Jason Derulo sings his name to different inanimate objects. Ranging from household items like decorative silver spoons all the way to different fonts in Microsoft Word, each object somehow just really does suit the “Jason Derulo” it’s given.

However, it must be noted that this is pretty much the only good thing that Jason Derulo has given TikTok. The rest of his contributions have been hated by the TikTok community for how cringe and corny they’ve been.

In particular, people despise his over-the-top attempts at doing dance challenges, like Drake’s Toosie Slide and Lpb Poody’s Address It. But regardless of how cringe Jason Derulo has become, there’s no denying that he made some absolute bangers back in the days.
