Insightful. Educational. Hilarious.

As a self-proclaimed expert/professional television critic (who did in fact study a course on screenwriting at uni), I have to say Jane The Virgin is one of the most cleverly written television shows I’ve come across.

It’s relevant, insightful, educational, hilarious and gripping – what more could you ask for in a series? It’s refreshing to be entertained by something that doesn’t revolve around toxic drama and questionable morals.

In addition to the top-notch plotline, Jane The Virgin’s has a killer protagonist, Jane Villanueva. Jane is a hard-working university student who, like most of us, has a change of heart during her undergraduate degree. Having seen all seasons many, many times, I’m here to impart the wisdom I gained from watching Jane navigate her way through uni life.

#1 It’s Never Too Late To Change Your Mind

Jane’s real passion is writing, but like a lot of us who’re tempted by a career in the art, she decides to pursue her next best option for its career practicality.

Jane studies a teaching degree, and while she believes in what she has to offer as a teacher, it isn’t until she completes her final prac units that she decides to pursue her true passion. Spoiler: Jane then goes on to become a published author.

#2 Education Is Still Relevant

Living in an era where social media stars can make millions from publishing their lives online, many of us beg the question: ‘is a tertiary education even worth it anymore?’

Jane teaches us the benefits of being in a professional environment surrounded by both experts and amateurs alike in your chosen industry. After attempting to write her first novel in her own time, she decides to pursue a postgraduate writing program.

We see Jane work her ass off throughout her Masters; she squeezes everything she can out of the program, learns from her mentors, and leans on the support of her peers before emerging as a published author.

Jane also teaches us the value of face-to-face interaction. Even after finishing her postgraduate degree and publishing her first novel, she joins various writing groups after realising she craves human connection with others in real life.

#3 Adjust Your Degree To Fit Your Lifestyle

Jane shows wannabe-students we can all make uni life work around busy schedules. She attends uni part-time during her undergrad degree so she can work at the same time and support herself financially.

And it gets better. Shortly after having her son, Jane applies for and enrols in her Masters program while learning the ropes of parenting AND working part-time as a waitress. The timing will never be ‘perfect’, it’s just about finding a way to make it work for you.

If you’re looking for some inspiration to get you through uni, or you’re just after your average virgin-gets-accidentally-artificially-inseminated-meets-evil-twin-impaled-on-an-iceberg dramedy, then Jane The Virgin’s got you covered.
