Marrickville-based brewery Hawke’s Lager is gearing up to reward the freshly vaxxed people of Sydney with a new incentive called ‘Jab & Slab’.

The company has put aside 250 slabs of beer to reward Sydneysiders who share their first vaccine shot with the internet (with all the relevant tags and hashtags), in an attempt to “[move] the needle towards a life with less lockdowns and more of what makes living in Australia so bloody good.”  ⁣

“Dunno, getting the nation vaccinated feels like a race to us,” the brand’s announcement on Instagram reads.⁣

It comes on the same day that Labor has proposed $300 cash incentives be given to people who get vaccinated. Incentives have been used extensively overseas, with businesses in some counties offering tickets to sporting events, debit cards, museum entries , scholarships and more.

David Gibson, Hawke’s Lager co-founder said, “The longer this [lockdown] drags on, the more damage is suffered by small businesses like ours, and in particular our hospitality mates.”

“Now, it seems the onus is on us to get ourselves out of this mess. And let’s be honest, there’s nothing like free beer to get Aussies going. We may not move the needle much with 250 slabs but we can do our bit by helping to strengthen the message.”

Previously, vaccinations couldn’t be advertised due to TGA guidelines that prevent pharmaceutical companies from advertising prescription drugs. But this was recently amended specifically to support the COVID-19 rollout.

It will be interesting to see how creative businesses get in the coming months, as we race toward a hot vax summer.

NSW Premiere Gladys Berejiklian set the target for 6 million jabs by the end of August in this morning’s press conference. She said she would announce a plan on the 29 August detailing how vaccinated people could potentially move more freely.

If you want to take a stab at a slab with the Hawke’s Lager guys, book your vaccine appointment (here are some tips on how to get that sweet AstraZeneca honeydew), post a photo of your freshly jabbed arm with the tags @hawkesbrewingco and #jabandslab. If you’re one of the first 250 to do it, you will be contacted by the team so they may deliver you a slab.
