I’m just going to come out and say it: Ja Rule has an odd career.

To the younger generation, he might be best known as one of the “masterminds” behind Fyre Festival, a now legendarily disastrous music event which eventually fell apart into a bunch of pissed off attendees and numerous lawsuits.

But even those of us old enough to remember the man before he claimed to have been bamboozled, swindled, led astray will know that “weird” has been the name of the Ja Rule game. Remember his 2013 romantic comedy, I’m In Love With A Church Girl? What about his disastrous 2012 record, Pain Is Love 2?

Well, now Rule has complicated things further by starring in an ad for a local Greek restaurant.

Oh, did I say “ad”? I meant Lynchian fever dream of bad green screen and bizarre, intense monologues.

I mean, nothing I can say will prepare you for the ad, so you might as well just dive in yourself.

Turns out there’s a pretty simple reason why the rapper decided to spruik a restaurant. It’s all part of promotion for a show he made called Pitch Perfect, which combines his “marketing expertise” with his interest in local LA restaurants. The aim was to help out a beloved small business, and also demonstrate Rule’s skill at putting places on the map. And I guess on both fronts, it was a massive success.

Anyway, if you want the full lowdown, he explains the whole gimmick in this clip.

But although the wild ad has been somewhat put to bed, that hasn’t stopped the flow of a bunch of memes.

Truly 2020 won’t stop getting weirder.
