I Am Not Okay With This has a simple premise: what if you were the world’s most lovesick, awkward teenager, desperate to finally make a meaningful connection with those around you? Oh, and also, you’re a superhero?

The new Netflix show is based on an acclaimed graphic novel by Charles Forsman. If that name’s familiar, it’s because Forsman also authored The End of the F***ing World, a surprise smash-hit for Netflix when it was released in 2017.

Clearly, I Am Not Okay With This operates in the same emotional territory as that acclaimed TV series. Both are dark, but ultimately hopeful looks at life as a lovesick loner. Only, I Am Not Okay trades the serial killer violence for superhero antics.

Better yet, the new show was co-produced by Shawn Levy, he of Stranger Things fame. Looks like this whole thing is a who’s who of Netflix talent, making it a very exciting proposition indeed.

The teaser is pretty light on plot, but it does give a broad indication of the show’s tone, following the heartworn Syd (Sophia Lillis, the star of the recent — and very good — Gretel & Hansel) as she navigates one helluva awkward conversation.
