Hugh Grant Did A Shoey And Still Got Roasted By Uni Students
"Four weddings and still can't drink."
I am aware that there is some important stuff going on in the UK right now. Political analysts are scrambling for election results, with a hung parliament likely on the cards. Citizens are tense or anxious or excited, or some combination of all three. Australians, tbh, are likely a bit confused.
So let’s all take a quick break from The Guardian‘s election liveblog, for some light British relief. Here is a video of ’90s rom-com legend and lukewarm cup of tea, Hugh Grant doing a shoey in an Oxford pub. It is a glorious moment of unity between British and Australian culture, and much more interesting than it has any right to be.
He’s just a 56-year-old man, sitting in front of some drunk uni bros, drinking some warm lager out of his shoe.

The above video hit the internet last night after being sent to Brown Cardigan. It’s now spreading all around the world with many international outlets being forced to explain what exactly a shoey is.
As it turns out, this isn’t the only footage of the night. The students Hugh was out with — rugby players from his old college at Oxford University — also got him into a sculling comp where he chugged two bottles at once.
The guy he was facing off against, Dom Hopkins-Powell, has uploaded the video to Facebook with the caption “four weddings and still can’t drink”. Which, okay. Binge drinking standards must be pretty wild at Oxford because this looks like a decent effort. If Bill Shorten even attempted this, he’d probably be PM within the week.

Oxford’s New College has now released photos on their Facebook page proving Hugh Grant was there for more than a piss-up. The actor also hosted a talk about press ethics — a topic he’s particularly vocal on. Since Grant was tied up in the News of the World phone hacking scandal, he’s regularly spoken out against poor behaviour in the media and bias in coverage of political affairs.
Your favourite stammering, Drake-loving Prime Minister is also extremely against the Tories, and has previously called Theresa May a “demented little Rotarian”. With that in mind, he might well be having a few more bevvies right now.
When I think of the British Spirit I think of humour, tolerance and pluck in the face of bullies. Ie reverse of DM. pic.twitter.com/rw9APGnEGO
