Hozier — he of taking you to church fame and gloomy gospel — isn’t exactly known for his social media antics, so when he accidentally uploaded a video of himself mucking around with an Instagram filter, the embarrassment was real.

In an Instagram story, Hozier  — aka Andrew Hozier-Byrne — could be seen using the Handsome Squidward filter, which chisels out your jaw into, as the name implies, a handsome version of Squidward, as per an old episode of Spongebob Squarepants.

It’s caught on recently due to the similarities to Chad, the incel ideal of an alpha male, complete with chiseled cheekbones and lush lips.

Essentially, Handsome Squidward is peak performance, and Hozier was keen to play around with it — in a pretty cringe video, he flirts to camera in a decidely ‘Chad’ bro way, saying “yeah gurl” and laughing ‘sexily’.

For fans who caught it, it stood out. He’s not really one for filter posting, which is why he almost immediately followed it up with a text apology.

“Hahahah Inconsolable Weeping Christ that Handsome Squidward content was Just For the Boys,” he wrote. “Pray for me. Thank you.”

Looks like it was a classic case of posting something to main instead of   ‘close friends’. We’ve all been there, but we don’t have 1.6 million followers.

He even posted a video clarifying he just pressed the wrong button.

“I am so mortified,” he said. “I’m not high. I just pressed the wrong button and then my phone … my phone shat the bed. And I couldn’t delete it fast enough.”

“You live by the Squidward filter, you die by the Squidward filter. I’m still a bit … You’re all drinking in the chaos on Twitter, God bless. Thanks for understanding. Thanks for your discretion. Thanks for not posting on Twitter.”

Apologies to Hozier — we can’t be discrete (and neither can Twitter). At least he’s able to laugh at himself. Find his journey below.

Hozier’s most recent release was a cover of classic ‘The Parting Glass’, as performed on The Late Late Show.
