The Rooster’s Calling

Games have been having a ~moment~. For some reason I can’t quite put my finger on, something that you can play online with friends or sink hours into at home is pretty popular right now.

Also games are, famously, fun. But to be honest, they can also be confusing. There’s a lot to learn and it can seem overwhelming at first.

But if you push through, you’ll open yourself up to a whole new kind of fun. So if you’ve been missing out until now, here’s everything you need to know to get into gaming.

There are lots of genres

You don’t have to have good aim to play games anymore. In fact, there’s basically a game for every kind of experience you feel like.

Some games, like the Life Is Strange series, are more like choose your own adventure stories where you decide what your character says and how they interact with people around them. Then there are games like Control, that gives you supernatural powers that let you pull chunks of concrete out of the floor to hurl at enemies.

Play with friends

Gaming is a great way to stay connected and playing with friends is one of the best ways to get into gaming. If your friends are long-time gamers, they’ll be able to help you out. If they’re also new, you’ll be able to figure it out together.

Either way, you’ll be able to do it together and that’s pretty cute. Some of the best new co-op games are Sea of Thieves, It Takes Two, Overwatch, and Among Us.

Console or PC?

Getting an Xbox or Playstation is probably the easiest way to get into gaming. Consoles are ready to go straight out of the box and they can run any game you install.

PCs are generally more expensive if you want the best hardware. But that also means they perform better and your games will look nicer.

Some games are exclusive to certain platforms, like Halo on Xbox, The Last of Us on Playstation, and League of Legends on PC.

The Nintendo Switch is the best option for people who want to play games on the move. It’s also got new and classic Nintendo games like Mario Kart and it’s the only way you can play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

At the end of the day, it’s about figuring out what you want to play and how much you want to spend. If you’re not sure, ask your friends what they have – some online games let you play with people who own a different console, but sometimes you’ll need the same console to play with your friends.

Download the right software

If you’re playing on PC, the easiest way to buy and play games is through Steam, Origin, or the Epic Games Store. Here, you can buy games from a digital storefront, launch them from your library, and even share them with friends.

You might also want to download Discord for easy voice chat, and OBS Studio if you want to start streaming.

Play on easy

Playing on the easiest setting generally means you have more health, enemies have less or do less damage, you’re given more hints to solve puzzles, or more time to react to events.

There’s nothing wrong with playing on easy when you’re getting into gaming, especially because it might help you enjoy your first few play sessions instead of getting frustrated and giving up.

Watch the pros

Practice makes perfect, but there’s nothing better than watching Twitch if you want to improve even quicker.

You can learn a lot about strategy in games like Valorant and Apex Legends from people who play games professionally. You might even find new games by watching what other people play.

Have the right snacks

Skill and hardware can only get you so far in a game without snacks to keep you fuelled up IRL. Luckily, Red Rooster has two epic Megaboxes that have everything you need to play all night.

The BBQ Megabox has a BBQ bacon burger, one piece of crunchy fried chicken, regular mash and gravy, small chips, and a drink. The Rippa Megabox comes with a Rippa Roll, two buttermilk wings, regular mash and gravy, small chips, and a drink.
