How To Cope When Your Work BFF Leaves You

Firstly, how could they do this to you.

They’re your rock. You bitch to them about your hopeless boss. You share memes with each other on your lunch break. When Carl, your extremely hopeless colleague, does something characteristically hopeless, you make judging eyes at each other. It’s a match made in heaven. Frankly, when they leave, you have no idea what to do with yourself.

If you’ve found yourself in this situation, try to do some of the following.

#1 Ask Yourself: Are They Really The Only Good Thing About Working There?

If your work BFF was truly the only thing getting you through your shift, then it might be time to look for opportunities elsewhere.

Sure, a gig’s a gig and everyone needs to earn some cash but there’s no point in wasting your time somewhere that’s mentally and physically draining the life out of you.

If all you’re getting from your job is a paycheck and a whole lot of a dread, it might be time to make like your BFF and move on. Use them as inspiration to make some changes in your life.

#2 Get Closer To Another Colleague

We’re not saying that your work BFF can be replaced because they certainly can’t — you got on with them because of all their unique quirks and jokes and no one will ever be quite like them (omg :'( kill me).

Instead, get to know another person and start to appreciate them for who they are. They won’t be your BFF but they’ll likely be just as great in their own way and soon, that hole in your heart will be filled right up.

#3 Make A Standing Appointment With Your BFF

The absolute worst part about a work mate leaving is feeling like you’re never gonna see them again. Make a regular monthly dinner or Saturday brunch catch up that you always have to stick to. That way — at least for the foreseeable future — you’re gonna see them regularly.

#4 Tell Them How Much You Appreciate Them

Now’s the time to get all mushy. Literally everyone loves a heartfelt card and a bunch of flowers, so turn up the cheesiness and make them feel special.

Not only will this give you the satisfaction of making them feel good, it’ll give you a chance to reflect on all the good times you two had with each other. Then play ‘Friends Forever (Graduation)’ on repeat.

#5 Focus On Working

If you really have no one else to talk to, just focus on your work. Get in, get out, put your head down and be the best employee they’ve ever seen.

We know it feels like work will never be the same again, but we promise: eventually you’ll adjust and it’ll get easier. But for now, you can wallow. Because everything sucks.
