With Hottest 100 voting closing earlier this week, the folks over at triple j are currently meticulously counting the nation’s votes for their favourite songs of 2018. Ahead of the big countdown this Sunday, they’ve revealed a couple of statistics that might have you re-examine who you think’ll take out top position.

First up, more punters than ever before have voted this year, smashing last year’s record by more than 370,000 votes. This year, 2,758,584 votes were cast — 80 percent of those came from people under 30-years-old, though the most common age skewed a lot younger: 18.

What does that mean for the Hottest 100? Well, we can only assume the list will be filled with youthful exuberance and joy. Maybe that means the meme-boosted ‘Confidence’ by Ocean Alley could take the #1 spot — vote aggravator Warm Tunas certainly thinks so, at the least.

In addition, more women voted this year than men, with 53 percent of votes coming from women, 45 percent from men, and 2 percent falling into a non-binary or ‘other’ category. Hopefully that means more women make the cut on the top 100 this year.

As for the state that turned up to vote, NSW lead the pack with 29 per cent of votes, followed by Victoria at 23 per cent. Things pretty much follow our population lines, with less votes per state and territory. Makes sense. Quite a lot of people voted in from overseas too — at 5 per cent of the final vote, the ex-pat vote nearly doubled from last year.

We’ve got our own suspicions on who will be featuring towards the top of the Hottest 100, but ultimately, we’ll have to tune in to find out. Listen in from 12pm Sunday 27 Jan on triple j.
