As your elderly neighbours (and Tasmanian journalists) always scream, “Aargh, rap music! All that hippity-hoppity is so loud!” Thankfully, such unfortunate noise disputes should end with the imminent release of Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions Of Jay-Z. Sheesh, fatherhood has really turned Jigga into a different person.
“Rockabye Baby transforms rock favorites into beautiful instrumental lullabies,” reads a description on the label’s official site. “Guitars and drums are traded for xylophones and bells, and the volume is turned down from an eleven to a two. Tonight, the cradle will rock.”
The Jay-Z installment features instrumental lullaby renditions of 12 of the rapper’s top hits, including ‘Empire State Of Mind’, ‘Izzo (H.O.V.A.)’, ‘Show Me What You Got” and, our favourite, ‘Big Pimpin”, because if babies can’t relate to lines like “I thug ’em, f**k ’em, love ’em, leave ’em” then really, who can?
Rockabye Baby aren’t new to the process of baby-fying popular hits. Previous entries in the series include songs by Blur, The Ramones, The White Stripes and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Here’s an example of the time they did a lullaby cover of Kanye’s ‘Love Lockdown’:
