It’s 2020, so it’s only natural that Hagrid from Harry Potter is officially cancelled.

Well, actually Robbie Coltrane, the actor who played the beloved character of Hagrid in the Harry Potter series, is in hot water after he defended J. K. Rowling and her transphobic comments.

Following the “people who menstruate” debacle back in June, where Rowling took offence at a headline that didn’t use the word ‘woman’, the best-selling author has been on an anti-trans tirade since.

Beyond proving that she’s a certified TERF (trans exclusionary reactionary feminist) by writing a 3,600 word essay all about the importance of biological sex in feminism, Rowling has even written Troubled Blood, a new novel focused on a “transvestite serial killer”.

So, in an interview with Radio Times where the Harry Potter actor was questioned about J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans Twitter thread, Coltrane decided to stick his foot into it and go full boomer.

“I don’t think what she said was offensive really,” Coltrane said in reference to Rowling’s June tweets during an interview with Radio Times. ”I don’t know why but there’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended.”

“They wouldn’t have won the war, would they?,” the 70-year-old actor and literal Baby Boomer said. “That’s me talking like a grumpy old man, but you just think, ‘Oh, get over yourself. Wise up, stand up straight and carry on.’”

While admitting that he sounded like a “grumpy old man” for his comments, which he did, Coltrane decided to do the only smart thing he did all interview: Stop commenting on, and defending, J. K. Rowling’s transphobic comments.

“I don’t want to get involved in all of that because of all the hate mail and all that shit, which I don’t need at my time of life,” Coltrane said to end his comments on the matter.

Despite not “wanting to get involved”, Robbie Coltrane’s defence of J. K. Rowling and her transphobic comments quickly spread on the internet. And because this is the internet, when people learned of Coltrane’s support of Rowling, “Hagrid” started to trend as people decided that the once-adored character was now officially cancelled.

Now let’s just hope and pray that Dobby doesn’t also come out to be a transphobe and further ruin our childhoods, too.
