The Grudge franchise is one of the most chillingly hard-to-watch entries in modern horror cinema. And it’s not even that clear why.

After all, there are other horror movies that do the ‘horrifying Japanese child haunts modern family’ thing. The Ring and The Grudge are nearly identical, at least on paper — stories of possession, and ancient grudges, and supernatural evil. But the latter series has something that the former does not; something vague and hard-to-define that makes it sit in another league entirely of its own.

And hey, guess what? The new American reboot of the series looks like it’s set to keep that pants-shitting legacy going.

Directed by Nicolas Pesce, the young auteur behind black-and-white serial killer drama The Eyes of My Mother, the new Grudge film stars John Cho as a real estate agent who discovers the house that he’s trying to sell is haunted by a vengeful spirit. Desperate for help, he turns to a cop — played by modern screen luminary Andrea Riseborough — and in the process draws her too into a web of horror and supernatural intrigue.

Basically, it’s all set-up for pure, mind-numbing terror, including an updating of the series’ famous shower scene.

Watch the entire dose of mind-melting, anxiety-inducing surreality below, and then get ready for the film’s release date on January 3 2020.
