Former Australian of the Year Grace Tame has revealed more details about the threatening phone call she allegedly received from a senior official at a government-funded organisation.

In her joint National Press Club address with Brittany Higgins last month, Tame explained that she had received a “threatening” phone call warning her not to speak poorly about Prime Minister Scott Morrison. She didn’t reveal much about the details of the phone call during her NPC address, but has since given more of an insight into it.

On Thursday, Tame gave a speech to a packed-out crowd at Adelaide Writers’ Week — during which, she divulged further details about the alleged incident. “I didn’t share this at the National Press Club but do you know what the threat was, from that person who phoned me? It was that they wouldn’t support the [Grace Tame] foundation if I said something about the prime minister,” said Tame.

For those unfamiliar, towards the end of her tenure as Australian of the Year, Tame launched her foundation — a not-for-profit philanthropic organisation designed to prevent, and respond to, sexual abuse of children and others.

It goes without saying that a foundation designed to protect children from sexual abuse is something that everyone should support, but according to Tame, she was warned that support of the foundation was allegedly conditional on her support of Morrison.

However, it’s worth remembering that we can confirm the person involved was not from the Prime Minister’s office, and Morrison has denied directing anyone to make such a threat.

During her NPC address, Tame alleged that she was warned not to speak poorly about Morrison because he “will have a fear” ahead of the upcoming election.

“I received a threatening phone call from a senior member of a government-funded organisation, asking for my word that I wouldn’t say anything damning about the Prime Minister on the evening of the next Australian of the Year Awards,” claimed Tame. ”’You are an influential person. He will have a fear,’ they said. The fear? What kind of fear? I asked myself.

“A fear for our nation’s most vulnerable? A fear for the future of our planet? And then I heard the words ‘with an election coming soon’…and it crystallised a fear — a fear for himself and no one else, a fear he might lose his position or, more to the point, his power.”

Tame has never revealed who allegedly made the threat, or which organisation they worked for and has indicated that she will not reveal this information.
