This week we said goodbye to everyone’s favourite show about real life, the afterlife and every moment in-between, The Good Place.

After four seasons, The Good Place bid farewell to some of our favourite characters as they moved on from the The Good Place. In the penultimate episode of The Good Place, Janet created a door for people to end their time in The Good Place when they were ready to end their journey.

In ‘Whenever You’re Ready’, the final episode, we then watch Jason, Chidi, and Eleanor’s journey of coming to peace with leaving The Good Place. However, unlike their fellow Team Cockroach members, Janet and Tahani decide to stay in The Good Place. Janet stays because, well, she can’t leave, and Tahani decides to dedicate her time to helping people by becoming an afterlife architect.

While readying herself to leave The Good Place, Eleanor discovers that despite Michael wanting to pass through the doorway, the reformed demon is unable to. So Judge Gen allows Michael to live out his days as human, thanks to Eleanor’s final request.

Upon entering the doorway, Eleanor’s body turns into lights that scatter through Earth. Her light encourages good deeds, and part of her light encourages a man to rethink his act of throwing away someone else’s mail. The light inspires the man to return the letter to the rightful owner who ends up being Michael on Earth.

The series ends with the two men meeting. Thankful for the good deed, Michael says: “With all the joy in my heart, and all the wisdom in the universe — take it sleazy.”

Reactions And Easter Eggs

Fans were quick to praise the way that The Good Place ended, calling the finale a “masterclass in TV”.  Beyond the perfect ending each character were given, The Good Place did was most other series fail to do – end at the right time, in the the right way.

There were no lingering what if’s or cliche endings, only satisfying conclusions for the characters we learned to love over the last four years.

Fans with sharp eyes were also able to picked out the little easter eggs that were left for viewers throughout the finale. For example, the jumper that Eleanor wore while entering the final door had six stripes representing the six Team Cockroach members.

Or the fact that Michael — who’s surname on Earth was, super convincingly, Realman – lives in apartment 12358, the name of their neighbourhood in The Good Place. Someone even pointed out that the bowtie that Michael gives Tahani is the same one that he wore in the first experiment.

As we can’t help but reminisce over the perfect show that was The Good Place, all we can hope for now is a spin-off all about Michael Realman and his life on Earth.
