The new R-rated comedy Good Boys has a very simple premise — what if you took the script for your latest Seth Rogan comedy, and instead of casting Rogen and his buddies, you cast a shedload full of children.

There is a precedent for this kind of thing, of course. Movies and television series as diverse as The Garbage Pail KidsThe Sandlot, the distinctly bizarre and unsuccessful Jonah Hill comedy The Sitter and even the show Pen15 — on air right now and well worth your time and attention —  have all worked to shatter the myth of childlike innocence. In these films, kids swear and puke and talk about fucking, and they do it all unashamedly.

The difference, however, with Good Boys, is that the extremity has been ratcheted up to a level that would make the Marquis de Sade blush. Watch the red band trailer first, and then we’ll reconvene below.

So yeah, that thing is wild, hey? Lots of dildos, lots of jokes about anal beads, lots of jokes about taking pretty much every drug under the sun. A clear highlight is the moment a horny teenager calls the central trio “Stranger Things” (gotta love a topical joke!) and that whole dildo/corner store door bit.

It all looks very silly, of course, and early reviews out of SXSW have highlighted the film’s lack of gravitas and narrative surprises. But hey, nobody buys a ticket to watch a film in which a kid stuffs a beer down their pants and pretends it’s their penis and expects Last Year At Marienbad, do they?

Good Boys releases in the US on August 16, and though an Australian release date hasn’t been set yet, it’s safe to say it’ll be some time around then.
