One of the more surprising break-out hit TV shows of the past few years is officially looking for new couch-sitters with casting for Gogglebox Australia’s next season now open.

When the concept of Gogglebox was first announced, ostensibly a TV show where you watch people watch TV shows, a lot of critics, myself included, laughed it off as a stunt idea doomed to fail. Four years and eight seasons in though and it now comfortably sits as one of my favourite local shows.

A large part of why the show has become so reliably entertaining is its excellent and diverse casting. Often just in the space of 30 or so seconds Gogglebox whips around the country, giving us the maniacal cackling of Greek-Australian’s Anastasia and Faye, the cheeky banter of Sri Lankan-Australian family The Delpechitras and the dry wit of gay couple Wayne and Tom.

The assorted mix of Aussies all giving their two-cents on the past week of TV, and in effect the goings on of the world at large, is due for a shake-up though with the recent announcements that Wayne and Tom and bubbly besties Angie and Yvie will be departing Gogglebox, making way for two new “families” to join the cast.

Casting commenced this week and is completely open to the public via the usual lengthy online application process, with the site stating producers are looking for “engaging, witty and warm people who love everything about TV and want to share their views with Australian Audiences.”

That every single person who has ever watched Gogglebox has at one point said out loud “you know, I’d be great on this show”, combined with the fact the paid gig involves sitting on your arse a couple nights a week means there’ll probably be an absolute shitload of applications.

To apply you have to reside in either Sydney or Melbourne and be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident. Not sure when applications close so I’d start cracking on it ASAP.
