After a few weeks of teasing and a few years of waiting, Gang of Youths have finally returned with their brand new single ‘the angel of 8th ave.’

It’s the first piece of new music from the Sydney band since their acclaimed 2017 album Go Farther In Lightness, which bagged them a stack of ARIAs and sent them on tour after tour around Australia. They’ve since permanently decamped to North London and enlisted a new band member: Tom Hobden, formerly of Noah and The Whale, who has officially replaced Joji Malani.

“I think it’s been challenging for us, this whole process, but it’s probably going to be good for our music,” bassist Max Dunn said in a presser, referring to the forced break induced by COVID. “We’ve gone in a less safe direction and it’s going to be more in line with Dave’s actual vision, rather than Dave pumping something out to get a deadline met.”

The new track won’t upset any apple carts: it’s Gangs through and through, all chest-thumping and heaven-chasing. There are flashes of new influences in there though — the band have spent some time channelling classic new wave acts, that’s for sure.

“It’s about falling in love, and finding a new life in a new city together,” frontman and songwriter Dave Le’aupepe says of the track.

The track dropped on streaming services last night, and now has a shiny new video to go along with it. Get stuck into it below.
