Independent Queensland Senator Fraser Anning has been slammed for his appalling response to the Christchurch terror attack.

Within hours of the dual mosque shootings that left 49 people dead, Anning released a press release blaming the attack not on the alleged perpetrators but on Muslim immigration.

“The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place,” Anning said. “Let us be clear, while Muslims may have been the victims today, usually they are the perpetrators.”

Anning also issued a number of tweets on the subject, including one in which he asked whether people still disputed “the link between Muslim immigration and violence”.

The Senator’s comments were swiftly condemned. Prime Minister Scott Morrison called them “disgusting” and said they had “no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament” — although given Morrison once reportedly encouraged his party to capitalise on anti-Muslim sentiment in the community in order to win votes, he’s hardly in a position to criticise.

A number of other politicians also hit out at Anning for his disgusting remarks.

Others on social media were even more direct.

Still others pointed out that the normalisation of right-wing extremism and Islamophobia in media and politics may very well have played a part in the attack.

Anning received just 19 votes in the 2016 election, but entered Parliament in 2017 as a replacement for One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts, who was found to be ineligible. He swiftly abandoned One Nation and later took up with Bob Katter’s Australian Party, although he was eventually disowned by them too.

He made international headlines after he used his maiden address to Parliament to call for a “final solution” to Muslim immigration, and earlier this year was spotted hanging out at a rally of right-wing extremists.
