Grab Yer Tissues: The Trailer For Mindy Kaling’s ‘Four Weddings And A Funeral’ TV Reboot Is Here
The best rom-com of all time is getting a new adaptation.
The modern remake machine was always going to slowly make its way around to Four Weddings And A Funeral.
After all, the original is one of the defining entries in the cinematic rom-com canon. The movie that launched the career of Hugh Grant, Hugh Grant’s floppy fringe (which would peak with Notting Hill), writer-director Richard Curtis (who would go on to give us Yesterday), and begin a whole new invasion of British talent into Hollywood, Four Weddings is a timeless classic for a reason.
Few other rom-coms ilicit so much pleasure from such a simple set-up, or have such a gorgeously drawn set of characters. It’s a movie that exudes warmth, and intelligence, and the fact that none of the principal cast ever quite topped their work in it (save for Grant, who clearly gave the best performance of his career as the villainous Phoenix Buchanan of Paddington 2), is only more testament to its sheer power.
So yeah, it wasn’t a question of if Hollywood would get around to placing its dirty mitts all up on it, it was a question of when. And it turns out the answer is right bloody now, ’cause Mindy Kaling of The Office fame has given her unique stamp on the project, and rebooted it as a television series for our modern streaming age.
Starrng Nathalie Emmanuel, AKA Missandei from Game of Thrones, the miniseries sticks pretty close to the source material (needless to say, Kaling and her crew haven’t messed with the iconic moment where the love interest with the floppy fringe gets caught in the rain) while also keeping things reasonably fresh.
The series doesn’t yet have an Australian distributor, meaning there’s no release date for us at this stage — but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t lose hope that some service might swoop in at the last moment and fulfil all of our rom-com needs.
