Watch The Foo Fighters Troll The Westboro Baptist Church With A Drive-By Disco Gig
"You shouldn’t be hating, you know what you should be doing? You should be dancing!”
The Foo Fighters have spent the last few years fighting a not-so-private war with members of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church.
The Church are well-known for spreading hateful rhetoric, having established homophobic, racist, transphobic and anti-Muslim pickets since the early ’90s. Though the church’s founder, Fred Phelps, passed away in 2014, and many of his family members have moved on from the Church, there are still at least 70 members who continue to work spreading misinformation and hate.
The Church have targeted The Foo Fighters, one of the biggest rock bands in the world, since at least 2018. The Church take umbrage with messages of positivity and acceptance spread by the band, and frequently hold demonstrations outside their shows.
But The Foo Fighters don’t take such attacks lying down. Instead, the band have developed a habit of trolling the hate group, with their recent counter-demonstration proving particularly effective.
Dressed as their comedic alter-egos, The Dee Gees, the band drove past the demonstration by the Church on the back of a flatbed truck. Armed with a megaphone, lead singer Dave Grohl encouraged the members of the Church to embrace love, rather than spreading malice.
“All right now, ladies and gentlemen, I got something to say. Because you know what, I love you,” Grohl began, dressed in a satin shirt. “I do! The way I look at it is that I love everybody. Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do? Can’t you just love everybody? Because I think it’s about love! That’s what I think, we’re all about love. And you shouldn’t be hating, you know what you should be doing? You should be dancing!”
From there, the band launched into a raucous cover of ‘You Should Be Dancing’ by the Bee Gees, spreading a message of care-free love and acceptance at total odds with the invective of the Church.
