It happens every year. Towards the end of semester two, you’re dreaming of the semester break when you'll be free of the stresses of uni for three whole months. When the holidays do finally arrive, there’s a honeymoon period for the first month. There are many big nights out that are followed by lazing around and doing nothing – because you can.

Then once the second month comes around, the slump hits. Summer boredom takes over and you find yourself in a rut, not knowing what to do. Feel like you have way too much time on your hands but you’re not doing much with it? Here’s how you can get yourself out of that slump.

Remind yourself you didn’t have to return to work with the rest of the nine-to-fivers

The internet was alive with memes in the last couple days as people all over the world returned to work this week. Sure, you might have had some killer long hours if you’re in retail over the Christmas period, but be thankful you don’t have to return to uni this week. There aren’t too many times in your life where you’ll get a three-month holiday. At uni you’ll get at least three – so make the most of it.

Avoid getting sucked in by the semester break binge-watching sesh

If you’re feeling the summer break boredom hit, chances are it’s because you haven’t been making the most of your break. Netflix may have brought out a whole range of new releases, but if you’re stuck in a binge-watching cycle of one show after the other, that’s one way to get yourself into a rut. After a hard year, you’re very much entitled to a couple of days where you don't leave your house or your PJs, but don’t let that be your entire holiday break.

Get outside (regardless of the weather)

You’ll feel a thousand times better. Been avoiding the outside world because the weather is yo-yoing between hot and rainy? If it’s hot, get yourself to the beach or pool or any body of water you can. We won’t expect you to go for a walk if it’s a torrential storm, but if you’ve been opting for Netflix when it’s just a bit overcast, chances are you haven’t seen natural light for most of the break. All it takes is a bit of fresh air to instil some optimism.

Find the cause of your rut

Address the problem head on. If you feel like you're stuck in a rut, it might be time to change your everyday habits. Change up your routine and try fitting in something you love every day. If you’re feeling a bit lost without the structure of uni life, add some organisation and activities to your days off. Don’t let summer boredom take over – make the most of your break now before you’re back into the full swing of the uni/work/life balance.
