Ahh Netflix, we have so much to thank you for. Thank you for finally offering an affordable alternative to Australia’s shocking illegal downloading problem.

Thank you for providing us the most binge-worthy show of all time in Making a Murderer. Thank you for spouting endless memes that may, for better or worse, never die. And now, thank you for delighting us to many new releases that we cannot wait to binge while blowing off every one of our responsibilities.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Season 2)

Tina Fey could write a show about grass growing and it would be funny. But when she writes a show about a woman who has been kept in captivity for over a decade, is freed and has to adjust to modern day New York, it is pure comedic gold.

Starring Ellie Kemper, first-time Emmy nominee Tituss Burgess, Carol Kane and Jane Krakowski (of 30 Rock fame), this show is the perfect amount of hilarious and heart-warming, instilling us with the optimism that is coursing through Kimmy Schmidt’s soul.

Also I’m not sure if there’s an award for best sitcom theme song, but if there is, this catchy auto-tuned theme would surely win. Absolute genius.

The Ranch

OK, so while a show about an ex-football player (portrayed by Ashton Kutcher) returning to his family’s ranch to help run their business sounds like horseshit, this show is surprisingly good. While it does occasionally fall victim to stupid and tiresome gags, the show is actually pretty reflective on some untouched issues, namely generational masculinity.

Before anyone berates me with claims of anti-feminism, this issue of ‘what is masculine?’ does actually come under the feminist movement, as some of the characters struggle to relate or connect to their tough father who constantly likens them to women with negative connotations. Not bad for that guy that hosted Punk’d for way too long, hey?

Inside Out

With every release, Disney Pixar studios always seems to step up and impress with an even better movie. But no one predicted the intelligent and innovative concept of Inside Out, featuring the voices of Amy Poehler, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling.

If you haven’t already seen this Oscar-winning flick then I’m not sure what you’ve been doing. But now it’s available on Netflix so you have no excuse. It deals with the inner workings of a child’s mind as they start to get older, and the execution is nearly flawless.

E.T. the Extra Terrestrial

When one thinks of the phrase ‘classic film’, this Spielberg masterpiece nearly always springs to mind. Starring a 7-year-old Drew Barrymore and perhaps the most famous alien of all time, this movie is as emotional as it is enjoyable. Not to mention one of the most famous one-liners ever. This is essential viewing for those who haven’t seen it and is essential re-viewing for those who have. It’s the perfect addition to any standard movie night.

Marley & Me

Look, this movie is only on this list to appease the heartless among you that can somehow endure watching this movie. There is plenty of heart wrenching movies on Netflix already – we didn’t need any more!

Despite all of that, this movie is actually pretty good and you should definitely watch it. Just prepare for the inevitable and stock up on your Kleenex.

Jackson Langford

Jackson is studying a Bachelor of Communication degree at the University of Newcastle and is the rightful heir to the throne.
