Today Facebook announced that the company would be rebranding as Meta.

In a move that very conveniently overshadows all the recent Facebook Papers controversy, CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared that the wider business would now be known as Meta during the Facebook Connect 2021 keynote.

While the names of the social media products under Facebook as a company would remain the same — like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — the overarching business would now be known as Meta.

The new corporate name will also oversee new technologies and products, like Zuck’s “metaverse” that was previewed during the keynote.

Zuckerberg explained that the name change was based on “a Greek word meaning beyond”, which is where the company formerly known as Facebook plans to take the business.

In a press release, the company added that Facebook was pivoting to a “social technology company” with the aim of “bringing the metaverse to life and helping people connect, find communities and grow businesses.”

Beyond social media apps, Meta plans to explore the virtual reality world in the hopes of strengthing connections. “The defining quality of the metaverse will be a feeling of presence — like you are right there with another person or in another place,” Zuckerberg noted in his Founder’s Letter. “Feeling truly present with another person is the ultimate dream of social technology.”

Unfortunately for the Facebook CEO, reception to the name change and foray into virtual reality did not go as expected.

People quickly noticed that the rebrand totally ignored a former employee’s concerning claims that Facebook allegedly values growth and profit over the safety of its users.

Not only this, but no one likes the horrifying Black Mirror-style ‘Metaverse’ that Zuckerberg teased during his keynote either. Oh, and the fact that Zuck isn’t exactly proving these whole “Mark Zuckerberg Is A Robot” rumours wrong with this virtual reality pivot.

Basically, Meta was turned into one huge joke the second it was announced. So here are all the best memes about Facebook’s rebrand to Meta:

But honestly, in the end, it doesn’t really matter. Absolutely no one will be calling Facebook Meta anyway.
