This Sketch Perfectly Takes The Piss Out Of The Clichéd Record-Loving Manic Pixie Girls
"Wait, you've seriously never heard of Kings of Leon before?"
It’s a trope almost as old as the rom-com genre itself: the “alternative rock chick”, a beautiful but enigmatic outsider who tests the convictions of the straight, white and bland heroes.
And the trope hasn’t died out, either. These days, the “alternative rock chick” is a slightly updated version of the manic pixie dream girl cliché that became old hat in the early two thousands. These stories are so old and hackneyed that you could tell them in your sleep.
Or, if you are extremely funny comedian Eva Victor, you could parody them in one deft video. Simply titled ‘The Girl From the Movie Who is ‘Different”, Victor’s video runs through the entire plot of one of those rom-coms, playing the character of an “alternative ingenue” who works at a record store.
The whole thing is brilliant, but my personal favourite moment is when Victor’s character introduces the hero to Kings of Leon. It’s just perfect.

Better yet, in the hours after Victor posted her clip, other Twitter comedians joined in on the fun.
They added the quarterback…

And the character the screenwriter was too racist to properly flesh out:

Rom-coms found dead.
