Internet nuisance, billionaire, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk now has his grabby hands on Twitter after an upcoming $61 billion AUD sale.

The world’s richest human being secured a deal to buy the beloved gremlin site on Tuesday, much to the concern of online rights advocates who fear his best interests are not with upholding the public sphere.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” said Musk in a statement.

“I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spambots, and authenticating all humans.”

“I hope that even my worst critics remain on Twitter, because that is what free speech means,” he said in an earlier tweet that day.

But coming from a man who once called one of the divers trying to retrieve school children stuck in a Thai cave a “pedo guy” after his rescue submarine design was rejected, and said he wanted to colonise Mars — time will only tell what is actually in store for his various detractors and trolls.

“Our concerns are not new,” a White House spokesperson said on the deal, while calling for widespread digital accountability. “The President has long talked about his concerns about the power of social media platforms, including Twitter and others, to spread misinformation.”

Meanwhile, shares went up by around six percent straight after the news broke, with Musk’s transaction now facing a shareholder vote, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

“Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it,” said Musk, egging his soon-to-be millions of users to step up to the challenge, by meme-ing his announcement.
