Chris Hemsworth is a cult leader, Dakota Johnson is a crook, and John Hamm is a vacuum salesman (okay, sure) in the first trailer for Bad Times at the El Royale.

Set in 1969, the film follows seven guests at the sinister El Royale hotel, which literally straddles the line between California and Nevada. In addition to Hemsworth, Johnson and Hamm, the movie stars Jeff Bridges, Nick Offerman, Cynthia Erivo and Cailee Spaeny, making this a clear entry in my favourite genre: psychedelic crime thrillers full of extremely attractive people trying to murder each other.

Bad Times at the El Royale was written and directed by Drew Goddard, who previously helmed The Cabin in the Woods and clearly has a thing for two way mirrors.

Hemsworth, for his part, has said the film had “one of the best scripts I’ve ever read”. Given that he appears to spend most of the movie without his shirt on, I’m inclined to agree with him.

Bad Times at the El Royale hits cinemas in Australia on October 18.
