Violent Soho, The Living End & More Offer Egg Boy Free Tickets For Life

Yesterday in Melbourne, Australian folk hero Egg Boy smashed a raw egg against Senator Fraser Anning’s head. It was the crack heard around the world, a shell of support, a yolk of hope. Now, his act of activism is earning him an unexpected reward.

In the aftermath of Friday’s terror attacks on mosques in Christchurch, Anning released a statement blaming the shooting on Muslim immigration to New Zealand. This statement was condemned both within Australia and abroad, with many finding Anning’s comments reprehensible.

But even though people shared in this revulsion, it was paired with a sense of despair. The statement was an attack on the wounded, further pain hurled upon a community already so clearly targeted.  It displayed the worst of what Australia can be, and that it came from an Australian senator made many feel powerless.

And then, with a humble egg to the back of Fraser Anning’s skull, Egg Boy rejuvenated us.

Many consider Egg Boy their own unofficial Australian of the Year. The teen’s courageous action and subsequent calm demeanour while being dogpiled by a group of grown men has given strength to those discouraged by the general terribleness of the world. It has galvanised people to keep going, and to rail against hate wherever it is found.

Egg Boy did this without apparent hope of reward. It was an egg for the people, an egg to speak for the millions who condemn Anning’s words. An egg of justice.

Even so, the internet has thrown its support behind him the best way it knows how: With memes. And now, some bands and music festivals have also taken to Twitter to express their approval for our Egg Prince, offering encouragement according to their own customs: With free tickets.

Several Australian musical groups have extended the offer of free concert tickets for life, including the Hilltop Hoods, The Amity Affliction and Violent Soho.

Egg Boy has also gotten similar invitations abroad, both American hip-hop festival Rolling Loud and indie folk band The Mountain Goats offering lifetime passes.

Not much is currently known about Egg Boy’s musical preferences. Identified via as high school student Will Connolly, Egg Boy has largely kept to the shadows since his egg hurling – aside from an Instagram story in which he warned that egging a politician may get you “tackled by 30 bogans at the same time”.

But if and when he does emerge, he’s going to have quite a few options to choose from.
