Missing Downton Abbey? Good news, then, because the creators are returning with an all-new period drama they’re pretty sure you’re going to love.

It’s called The Gilded Age, and it’s set in the world of the richest families of late 19th century New York, centring on the story of a young heiress trying to infiltrate the elite social circles of the wealthy few.

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes will be writing the new show, which he’s had on the backburner for a few years. In fact, The Gilded Age sounds like it’s a bit of a passion project for him — in a statement today he described finally getting to do the show as “fulfillment of a personal dream”, saying he’s been “fascinated by this period of American history for many years”.

“The truth is, America is a wonderful country with a rich and varied history, and nothing could give me more pleasure than be the person to bring that compelling history to the screen,” he said.

In addition to Fellowes, Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame will also return to work on the project, giving us hope that the show may just fill the void Downton has left in our hearts — and pretty soon, too. The show has been picked up by NBC, and is slated to make its debut with a season of 10 episodes coming in 2019.
