Derryn Hinch Wrote A Book Called ‘Winning Wordle’ And This Feels Unnecessary
“I had an absolute ball writing this guide,” Hinch wrote in a Facebook reply to himself.
By all accounts, Derryn Hinch is incredibly into Wordle.
He’s so into Wordle, in fact, that he regularly posts about his gaming shenanigans on Twitter, and penned a book called Winning Wordle, which is described on its website as “a charming and handy guide on how to think outside the square and outwit the experts, from a bloke who knows a lot about words”.

Wordle of course is the word game that took the world by storm earlier this year, to the extent that it was bought out by the New York Times. Then there were a whole bunch of spin-offs — Worldle, Heardle, even Cloudle — before the NYT arguably ruined the vibe and the hype died down.
Not so for Derryn, though. On the cover of the book, you’ll see that Winning Wordle is the brainchild of “the author of two Scrabble books,” and look, it’s all true! Hinch wrote The Scrabble Book in 1976, and The Ultimate Guide To Winning Scrabble in 2001.
Strategy guides for a game like Scrabble make sense, given that it’s a competitive game played with other people. But Wordle is a game you play by yourself. Is there any winning when it’s just you? Is there really any winning, Derryn? In the end, is the race not only with ourselves?
Hinch, who famously fell asleep on his first day in Parliament, dropped the book in March 2022. “I had an absolute ball writing this guide”, he wrote in a reply to his own Facebook post. “Didn’t realise how much I had garnered about the game and tactics.”
One Twitter user took issue with the book, writing “Wordle is a free game that takes me at most two minutes. Don’t need a book to solve it,” to which Derryn shot back, “Don’t buy it then. At most two mins? Bullshit.”
