All The Absolutely Wild Stuff That Goes Down On Depop, Gen Z’s Thrift Shopping App Of Choice
"thinking of buying this" "buy it then"
If you’ve ever tried to sell or buy secondhand clothes online, you already know that, for some strange reason, it takes place in a world devoid of grammar, logical sentence structure, or social decorum.
And while we thought that the morose messages and pictures on Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace couldn’t be beaten, an Instagram account dedicated to the dramas of Depop reveal a whole new level of desperate plots and bizarre behaviour.
In case you’ve only just learnt what TikTok is and feel fatigued at the idea of learning about another app, don’t stress. It’s pretty simple: founded in 2011, Depop is a marketplace heavily influenced by Instagram aesthetics. Fashionistas and labels sell clothes they’ve styled into beautiful photo grid that wouldn’t look out of place on an influencer’s page — in fact, they’re often one-and-the-same, or, at least, very similar.
Depop currently has more than 13 million users worldwide: over the past few years, it’s grown into a favourite for gen z, with the clothes playing heavily off ’00s and Y2K-era nostalgia. It’s also the wild west, with teens selling their wares and junk at the back of the wardrobe without much oversight nor interference from the app, meaning some of the interactions are pretty… off.
Enter @Depopdrama, the Instagram account collating some of the best (worst?) moments of the app. With 97,000 plus followers, the account (run by an anonymous London creative) receives around 250 submissions a week, as revealed to Dazed Magazine. And boy, they’re truly stunning.
One thing about teens is they often don’t have jobs or money, which means a lot of them are coming up with inventive ways and sob stories to get a discount.
Elsewhere, people are making up elaborate reasons as to why they haven’t sent their items yet.
Or they have very genuine reasons that aren’t received well.
Of course, there are the creepy messages too.
In short, we’re absolutely obsessed. Follow @depopdrama and add some bullshit to your life.
