No matter what happens after the votes are counted this evening, it’s safe to say the real winners this election are lovers of delicious voting-day foodstuffs. And puns.

Not only have more than 2.2million people tweeted about their democracy sausage, Iced Scomos, Jacquie Lambingtons, a plain white roll dubbed “The Pauline” and Bob Brownies (no, not that kind) were found on offer at polling booths around the country.

Hats off to the creators of Au Pear Tarts, Tanya Pilbiscuits, Richard Di Nutella Hazelnut Cake, Bill Shortbread, Scone Morrisons and Clive Palmiers.

You could pick up a slice of Linda Burney Love Cake, a Bleached Coal Cupcake, Christopher Pyne Lime Slice or Bob Hawke’s “Silver Bodgie” Cookie.

Adani Coal Chocolate Crackles, Tax Break Fast Cookies, Sugar Coated Election Promises and Darling River Bed Brownies were plentiful.

Labor’s Pensioner Dental Plan tuned out to be lolly teeth, sitting alongside Bob Hawke’s Medicaramel Slice, Tony Abbott’s Onion Tart and George Christensen’s Manilla Slice.

Pennies From Heaven, Dr Carrot Phelps Cake, Pairlament Slice — which is full of nuts.

Bobka Babka, Bob & Blanched Almond Orange Cakes, Dutton Dressed Up As Lambington, Jelleigh Sales Boats. The puns just kept coming.

Not content to theme our baked goods, some polling places had themed democracy sausages.

Some had the relish to go with it.

This one isn’t a pun, but it is incredibly wholesome — the consulate in Istanbul cracked out some Tim Tams for the homesick.

Ah, democracy. Isn’t it grand?
