Netflix Just Announced A True Crime Anthology Series Starring David Tennant, So Life Is Good
Your appetite for murder has just been sated.
Our collective true crime obsession shows no sign of slowing down, with Netflix today announcing an anthology-style murder mystery series called Criminal.
Yep, just when you thought we had gotten our fill of blood, murder and terse-looking police officers, some new slice of violence drops straight onto our plate.
Not that it’s really surprising — the world is so distinctly bleak at the moment that it makes total sense that we like our content to come in one of two varieties. Mass entertainment in 2019 is either edgeless, beaming superhero stuff that serves as pure escapism, or it’s fucked-up shit coated in a thin film of blood and viscera that throws our tense, unpredictable times right back in our sour faces.
Anyway, Criminal is a little different. Rather than telling one extended story over multiple episodes, the show will instead tell one tale per hour-long instalment. Moreover, it’s boasting a distinctly international flair — the 12 separate episodes take place in countries as far flung as the UK, Germany, France and Spain.
We’d love to tell you more, but unfortunately Netflix are really keeping shtum on this one — the only other info the delightfully cryptic teaser gives away is the appearance of David Tennant and Hayley Atwell, both of whom shuffle in front of the camera looking distinctly glum.
Of course, for many of you, “David Tennant” are the only further words that you needed to hear anyway — now that Good Omens, his delightfully Satanic end-of-the-world comedy is drawing to a close, it’s nice to know that longtime fans of the actor will have something else to pore over.
The exact release date of Criminal is yet to be revealed, sadly — the teaser simply portentously promises that it’s coming in “fall”, which could mean anything from late September to early December. Here’s to hoping that means sooner rather than later.
