David Stratton Has A New Movie Review Show, But Margaret Is Nowhere To Be Found
Purveyors of wobbly camera work beware! The grumpier half of Australia’s favourite movie reviewing duo is back.
Created in partnership with three of the country’s leading arthouse cinemas — Cinema Nova in Melbourne, Hayden Orpheum in Sydney and Luna Palace Cinemas in Perth — David Stratton Recommends features the septuagenarian critic sharing his thoughts on new release indie films. New reviews will be available each week via the cinemas’ respective Facebook pages.
“I’m very happy to be able to provide comments on some of the more interesting films playing in Australia’s independent cinemas,” said Stratton. “Since ABC TV’s At the Movies came to an end in 2014 I’ve very often been told this sort of commentary is missed, and while I can’t bring Margaret Pomeranz along with me for these brief video reviews I hope they will prove useful and illuminating for serious cinema-goers.”
Margaret, for what it’s worth, is doing just fine. She’s currently one of the hosts of Foxtel’s Stage & Screen.
Now admittedly, Stratton’s new web series doesn’t have quite the same production values as his old show… or any production values, come to mention it. Still, there’s something undeniably comforting about having old mate telling me which movies to spend my money on, even if he doesn’t have a teleprompter. Or a set. Or a halfway decent camera.
Here he is talking about the new Australian horror movie Hounds of Love.
And here he is on 20th Century Women.
