In what is quite literally the only news I care about on this dreary Thursday afternoon, three cows have escaped from a trailer and gone on an adventure throughout suburban Melbourne overnight.

An 80-year-old man was driving his Ford Falcon with the cows safely confined in a trailer in tow at about 6:40pm on Wednesday night. However, after trying to make it through a roundabout, the trailer rolled, releasing the three cows into the streets of Ferntree Gully.

From there, the three heifers went on their own goddamn adventure, roaming the streets for hours before one ended up stuck in a local backyard, while the other two were found a short time later in a Coles carpark.

Sadly, Victoria Police have said the cows were extremely distressed and charged at locals trying to help capture them. “This was a wonderful show of community spirit with so many local people coming out to assist in the safe recovery of all three heifers,” Acting Senior Sergeant Melanie Woods from Knox Police said in a statement. “Thankfully no one was injured as we searched for the girls as they were quite distressed and at times, had charged at some people who were trying to assist with their recovery.

“I would really like to thank all those involved as we wouldn’t have been able to safely return the heifers home without the help of those who came out and stayed the course overnight.”

The search and rescue effort included the CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria, the SES, local vets and vet nurses, farmers and Council Rangers, who all pitched in to capture the animals. All three cows were eventually captured and sedated before emergency crews loaded them back onto a trailer and transported them back to the farm.

Thankfully, all three cows escaped the ordeal relatively unharmed — albeit a little stressed.
