Listen, I’m not one to tell people what they should do in their relationships. That’s none of my business. However, I am telling you that you only have 11 days left to break up with your COVID boyfriend.

If 2023 has taught us anything about relationships, it’s that people are finally starting to realise their worth and are letting go of people (men) who no longer serve them. I feel like every day I woke up to news that another celebrity couple were breaking up. Sofia Vergara and Joe Mangienello, Britney Spears and Sam Asghari, Jeremy Allan White, Rosalia, and Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are just a small selection of the celebrities that are now single.

Beyond noticing how incredibly amicable many of these breakups were, so many of these celebs started thriving post-breakup. It made me think, are we living in the era where being single and playing the field is finally celebrated? If nothing else, 2023 was the year to realise that you’ve probably grown out of the person you chose to cuddle up and spend time with during the COVID years.

I totally understand that during COVID, you just needed someone or something to cling onto to make everything around you make sense. Nothing was normal and our entire identities and priorities changed. However, now we are coming out of lockdowns and are able to live our lives again. You may notice that your partner still wants to stay inside when you want to party, or maybe you just want to start living your life on your own terms after having the entire world shut down. A partner might be reminding you of the person you were during lockdown. I say shrug all that off and live your best life.

If you want some inspiration on what to do after dumping your COVID boyfriend, let’s reflect on some of the biggest relationship break-ups of the year.

You can go the Taylor Swift route and have the best year of your life where your career hits dizzying heights as you very publicly date someone who is actually happy to be in your presence. This is the best route in my opinion.

Or you can go full Sophie Turner and realise that you’re way cooler than your husband after carrying the dead weight of their Disney career on your back. If the rumours are that you party too much, go out and party! Make out with an aristocrat! It’s your world girl.

Something you can do (but I don’t recommend) is get yourself into a very messy relationship like Ariana. But let’s not try to break up a marriage and family in the process, shall we?

A fun thing you can do is become the poster girl for divorce like Emily Ratajkowski and say that it’s “chic to be divorced by the age of 30”. Okay icon. Dare I say divorce is the hottest new trend?

Either way, it’s time you leave your COVID baggage behind in 2023. Let’s not bring that trash into the new year.
