This post discusses sexual assault.

This morning the nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced and as expected, Casey Affleck has been nominated for Best Actor for Manchester By The Sea. Affleck won Best Actor in a Drama at the Golden Globes a couple of weeks ago.

Lately conversations surrounding Manchester by The Sea and Affleck’s success have begun to touch on the sexual assault allegations against Affleck during the filming of I’m Still Here in 2010. These allegations were settled out of court.

Some have questioned why these events have largely been ignored in coverage of Casey Affleck’s recent success up until now — particularly as Nate Parker’s assault claims were certainly the focus while he was promoting Birth of A Nation — pointing out that the privilege of his family name has seemingly protected his career.

Not everyone is staying quiet, however. Fresh Off The Boat star, Constance Wu, last night tweeted her disgust at Casey Affleck’s Oscar nomination and Hollywood’s tendency to ignore sexual assault allegations against powerful men for convenience.

It’s unclear if this frankness will not have any repercussions for Wu, but it’s still hard to believe any of this will actually impact Casey Affleck’s career.
