Clive Palmer Bought Hitler’s Car For His Weird New Car Museum
It's unclear how much he paid for the vehicle.
Billionaire politician Clive Palmer has reportedly purchased a Mercedes-Benz owned by Adolf Hitler that was seized at the end of World War II.
According to the Courier Mail, Palmer has finally secured the purchase after two years of negotiations with an unnamed Russian billionaire.
The car — a Mercedes-Benz 770 Grosser Offener Tourenwagen — AKA the Super Mercedes — was acquired for an undisclosed sum of money. Prior to his ownership, the vehicle has been owned by multiple rich car dudes since being seized by the US military at the end of the war.
The Super Mercedes also features bulletproof glass and armoured panelling and is considered “the most significant automobile ever offered for public sale.”
It is unclear how much the car sold for, but it is worth noting that a USD$7 million bid made on the vehicle back in 2018 was rejected for being below the minimum asking price.
The vehicle — along with a Rolls-Royce previously owned by King Edward VIII — was purchased by Palmer to feature in a new car museum he wants to build on the Gold Coast. Palmer reportedly has plans to showcase 600 cars on rotation when he builds his museum, although there is no concrete plan on when or where, exactly, this will be built.
While Palmer plans to showcase the cars in a museum, alongside other historically significant vehicles, the concept of spending potentially millions of dollars on Nazi paraphernalia is undoubtedly a very weird move — even for Clive Palmer.
