Weep In Despair: Instagram Influencers Have Discovered Chernobyl
It's the worst thing to happen to the area since 1986.
You know what’s hot? The molten radioactive sludge uneasily contained within the hastily built concrete sarcophagus that entombs Chernobyl. You know what else is hot? HBO’s dramatic mini-series, Chernobyl.
Since the drama aired, everybody has been absolutely keen for the disaster narrative. Based on the real-life disaster which occurred in April 1986, Chernobyl tells the story of a nuclear power plant that exploded and the people who let it happen.
Everyone’s gone bananas for this old tragedy!
However, there have been real-life ramifications for this clunking, inhospitable old nuclear zone. Picking through the rubble of death, long-term illness, glowing radioactive animals and poisoned rain, come a new and more insidious blight.
Instagram influencers.
That’s right, the worst people in the world have flocked to the very real site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster to take hot shots in order to get sponsored by shoe companies. That’s capitalism, baby.
Talk about a glow up! (because they are radioactive? Get it?)
Young lady, there’s no point in wearing a protective suit if it doesn’t cover your instagrammables!
Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin has heard about the new trend, and while flattered, has also begged for people to be sensitive to the historical tragedy. Because, you know, people died.
“It’s wonderful that #ChernobylHBO has inspired a wave of tourism to the Zone of Exclusion,” he tweeted.
“But yes, I’ve seen the photos going around.”
“If you visit, please remember that a terrible tragedy occurred there. Comport yourselves with respect for all who suffered and sacrificed.”
