Sometimes a story is so wild that we don’t have time for special ledes or introductions, and instead must dive straight into the meat of things. So: Cher tried to volunteer for the US Postal Service, and now she’s a massive meme.

Okay. Let’s begin at the beginning. The Postal Service is currently under attack from the Trump administration. Trump himself has repeatedly said that he will block funding to the USPS, and he has admitted the reason is to hold up mail-in voting for this year’s election. “They need that money in order to make the post office work, so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump has said on the record.

“Now, if we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting, they just can’t have it.”

If that sounds like Trump is admitting that he wants to sway the November 2020 election, that’s because that’s precisely what that is. As a result, his comments have been met with outcry from many Americans — including Cher.

Horrified by Trump’s plans, the singer and cultural icon has decided to take matters into her own hands, by offering to volunteer for the USPS.

Which is where this story gets even weirder, kicked off by Cher’s bizarre Tweet.

Don’t get me wrong: Cher’s decision to do some practical, hands on good for the postal service is admirable. But that tweet is simply wild — particularly the “Hi, this is Cher” part — and has therefore unsurprisingly kicked off a barrage of Tweets.

And she’s still going too, as desperate as ever to help out.

We will keep you updated of this breaking story as it unfurls.
