As live gigs and music festivals slowly return to the nation, so too are instances of dangerous stage diving and crowd surfing.

This particular cautionary tale took place at This That festival in Newcastle. The festival, which featured the likes of Confidence Man and Jack River went ahead last week at Wickham Park. Rock and roll revivalists The Chats — notorious for attracting punters with high-flying ambitions — took the the mainstage for their set at 7pm.

The action started as the band were joined by an audience member who raged away in the wings as they burnt through the final song from their debut album ‘Better Than You’.

Thrashing around whilst holding some sort of plastic bag, the punter initially seemed intent to remain stage side with his idols. All of that changed as the band started playing their ubiquitous hit ‘Pub Feed’, as the stage invader attempted to clear the eight-foot gap between the stage and the awaiting crowd.

As seen in video captured by attendees and reposted by Brown Cardigan: he was not successful.

While the video looks pretty gnarly, accounts from other attendees reported that the unlucky punter was seen walking away from the crash site with the help of security.

It’s worth noting that the jump was probably doomed from the start. A successful drive would mean clearing the punter barrier as well as the looming void between stage and relative safety of the packed crowd while maintaining enough height to land into the arms of audience members.

The individual later gave his two cents about his accident, simply posting “I slipped” into the comment section of the Brown Cardigan video
