The cast of Amazon’s award-winning series Transparent have lent their voices to a PSA backing the push for transgender rights.

Trans and cisgendered cast members including Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffman, Alexandra Grey and Trace Lysette joined series creator Jill Soloway in recording the video for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The 75 second clip sees them throw their support behind Gavin Grimm, a 17-year-old transgender boy from Virginia who filed a lawsuit against the local school board after he was told he could not use the boy’s restroom at his school.

“Adults in his community bullied him and called him a freak,” explains Light.

“When trans people like me are turned away from using restrooms that match our true gender, we can’t go to work, go shopping, or go to school,” says Grey. “We can’t be part of society.”

Transgender rights are a thorny political topic in the United States right now, with President Trump recently rescinding guidance orders issued by the Obama administration that sought to protect the rights of transgender students.

Here in Australia, the South Australian government recently introduced new guidelines to protect the rights of transgender students – although as the conservative outcry over Safe Schools has shown, there’s still plenty of headway to be made.
